This is a great place to go to get a feel for old Atlanta. So much of our history is wiped away with new building projects, but if you go and read about the people that are interred at Oakland, you begin to see the people who built this city and made it thrive.

There's not a more historic cemetery in Atlanta, and probably not a more beautiful one. Oakland Cemetery dates back to 1850, and has some of Atlanta's most famous people forever within its walls. You'll find the graves of golfer Bobby Jones, author Margaret Mitchell, and entrepreneurs Morris and Emanuel Rich, founders of Rich's Department Stores. Since the Battle of Atlanta was fought only a few miles to the east of the cemetery, there's a section where about 3000 Confederate soldiers are buried. Well worth your time to spend a spring or fall afternoon wandering its grounds.
